Sutherland moved to Sparta, IL. After several years practicing medicine Dr. Sutherland decided that Sparta needed more then just the 12-bed hospital currently available. Dr. Sutherland purchased a large two-story brick house on the east side of Sparta. The first floor of the old home was remodeled to house physician offices while the second floor was converted into a 15-bed hospital. After Dr. Southerland died in an Automobile accident his family elected to sell the hospital to the city of Sparta and the Sparta Community Hospital District was created. Several expansions to the building and increased services over the years have kept Sparta Community Hospital a center for Health Care in Southwestern Illinois. Sparta Community Hospital is currently undergoing the largest expansion project in its history. [Expansion Page]
