This Is Us: More Than Healthcare — Our 2026 Community Economic Impact
National Hospital Week is often a time to celebrate the people behind healthcare — the individuals who care for patients and communities every single day. At Sparta Community Hospital, it is also an opportunity to reflect on the broader role rural hospitals play in strengthening the communities they serve and what it truly means to Believe in Better.
According to a newly released Economic Impact Report prepared with assistance from the Illinois Health and Hospital Association, Sparta Community Hospital District generates an estimated $111.7 million annual economic impact throughout the region and supports approximately 700 jobs through both direct employment and the ripple effect of healthcare spending throughout the local economy.
The Illinois Health and Hospital Association also reports that for every hospital job in Illinois, an additional 1.6 jobs are created in other sectors of the economy through healthcare-related spending.
“When people think about hospitals, they naturally think about healthcare first — and they should,” said Jennifer Barbour, Director of Marketing & Relations at Sparta Community Hospital. “But rural hospitals also play a huge role in the health and success of a community beyond patient care.”
For rural communities, that impact extends far beyond healthcare services alone. The jobs Sparta Community Hospital provides support local families. Employees spend money at local businesses, partner with schools and organizations, and help keep essential healthcare services close to home for area residents.
Healthcare dollars spent locally continue circulating throughout the community, creating a ripple effect that helps strengthen the local economy and support additional jobs and services throughout the region. When communities have access to local healthcare, people are more likely to choose to live here, raise families here, work here, shop locally, and invest in the community.
That ripple effect can help support industries such as:
- Retail
- Restaurants and food service
- Construction
- Maintenance and repair services
- Transportation
- Education
- Childcare
- Banking and financial services
- Professional services
- Other local businesses and service industries
What This Means for Our Communities
A strong local healthcare system impacts more than doctor visits and hospital stays. It means:
- Access to healthcare services closer to home
- More local jobs and economic stability for families
- Support for local businesses and community organizations
- Stronger schools and community partnerships
- Reduced travel for care and specialty services
- Continued investment in healthcare services and technology
- A healthier, more stable community for future generations
In addition to hospital services, the report reflects the impact of Sparta Community Hospital’s broader network of care, including primary care clinics, specialty services, rehabilitation, home health, behavioral health partnerships, mobile health services, and community outreach initiatives.
Sparta Community Hospital is proud not only of the role it plays in strengthening the local economy and providing access to care close to home, but also of the employees who provide that care every single day. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Sparta Community Hospital continues working to deliver lifesaving care and healthcare services that enhance the health and well-being of both individuals and the communities it serves.
At Sparta Community Hospital, Believe in Better means continually investing in healthcare access, strengthening services close to home, supporting local families, and working to improve the health and future of the communities served throughout the region.
