Sparta Community Hospital is equipped to provide top-quality infusion and injection services within the Outpatient Surgery Department.  Our experienced team is administers infusion therapy for medication, hydration, and nutritional support, as well as injections for vaccinations or other medical treatments. The team also provides nursing care for complex wound vac patients and routine central line care.

What is an Infusion?

Infusion therapy is a safe way to take medicines or fluids that cannot be taken by mouth.  Instead, medications flow through a flexible tube (catheter) or needle that is usually placed in a vein or just under the skin.

Your provider may prescribe infusion therapy to treat a range of conditions such as autoimmune and immune disorders, blood disorders, heart disease and microbial infections.

What is an Injection? 

Injection therapy is a common way to deliver medications or other substances directly into the body through a needle and syringe.  This allows for targeted delivery of the medication.

What is the Difference?

The major difference between an infusion and an injection is the period of administration.  Injection Therapy is often completed within minutes, while Infusion Therapy can take as little as 5  minutes or can last several hours.

Patient Referrals

  1. Medical Officers should call 618-443-1336 to request a specialized order form.
  2. Fax form, clinical notes, demographics and the patient’s insurance card to 618-443-1367.
  3. A team member will contact the referring provider to confirm receipt.
  4. The patient’s benefits will be verified and required prior authorizations will be obtained. Providers outside of SCHD must provide proof of prior authorization.
  5. The patient will be contacted to schedule an appointment.
