Our Mission

Sparta Community Hospital District (SCHD) exists to improve the wellness of our communities by providing and coordinating compassionate, value-based health services.

Our Promise

At Sparta Community Hospital, we believe the community’s health begins with the health of the health of the human condition. Here, providing care that exceeds expectations is truly a team effort. We empower our people to help guide us, and in turn we provide them with the finest benefits and every opportunity to grow and succeed. We treat our specialty providers, partners and volunteers like family. We are deeply grateful to our thoughtful donors whose impact can be seen in the state-of-the-art technologies and clean, modern, facilities they help provide. We began our mission in 1953 to give our community the highest level of care possible, a promise we’ll keep today, tomorrow and the next. It’s a philosophy based on the simple notion that nothing can grow without healthy roots and the best way for us all to thrive begins with a healthier you.

Our Story

The story of Sparta Community Hospital begins in 1935 when Dr. J.C. Sutherland moved to Sparta, IL. After several years practicing medicine Dr. Sutherland decided that Sparta needed more then just the 12-bed hospital currently available. Dr. Sutherland purchased a large two-story brick house on the east side of Sparta. The first floor of the old home was remodeled to house physician offices while the second floor was converted into a 15-bed hospital. After Dr. Sutherland died in an automobile accident his family elected to sell the hospital to the city of Sparta and the Sparta Community Hospital District was created in 1953. Several expansions to the building and increased services over the years have kept Sparta Community Hospital a center for Health Care in Southwestern Illinois. During the last decade, Sparta Community Hospital completed its largest expansion project in its history.
