Winter Driving Tips

We know that driving in winter weather can be tough, but with a little extra care, you can stay safe on the road. Here are some simple tips from the CDC to keep in mind:

1. Check Before You Go

Before heading out, take a moment to check road conditions on Getting Around Illinois. If the weather is bad, the safest choice is to stay home unless you absolutely have to go out.

2. Clear the Snow

Make sure your car is completely clear of snow and ice before driving. It’s not just about seeing better—it’s about keeping everyone on the road safe!

3. Follow the Rules

Stick to the basics: keep your eyes on the road, buckle up, follow speed limits, don’t text and drive and never drive under the influence.

4. Take It Slow

Snow and ice can be sneaky! Slow down to stay in control, especially on bridges and overpasses where it’s often more slippery.

5. Give Yourself Space

Leave extra room between you and other cars—about 5-6 seconds instead of the usual 3-4. This gives you more time to stop if you need to.

6. Don’t Crowd the Plow

If you’re behind a snowplow, give it plenty of room. They move slow and make wide turns, but they’re making the roads safer for everyone.
