Hands-On Surgical Experience Brings Science and Medicine to Life for Local Students

The Sparta Health and Wellness Foundation, in partnership with the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA), recently gave local middle school students an unforgettable opportunity to experience the world of modern surgery — right here at Sparta Community Hospital.
During the Surgical Skills Experience, students practiced hands-on techniques using laparoscopic simulation boxes and endoscope setups designed to mimic real surgical environments. Each station challenged their focus, coordination, and problem-solving — the same skills surgeons use every day in the operating room.
Students explored the design and function of surgical instruments, learned about arthroscopy and minimally invasive procedures, and saw how innovation continues to advance the future of medicine.
“It was incredible to see students so engaged and curious about how surgery works,” said Jennifer Barbour, Director of Marketing & Relations. “Programs like this help spark an early interest in healthcare and show our youth that opportunities in medicine can begin right here in our own community.”
