Inside the Human Machine: A Hands-On STEM Experience for Future Healthcare Leaders
What if learning about the human body didn’t come from a textbook—but from building it, testing it, and bringing it to life?
This summer, Sparta Community Hospital is inviting middle school students to do exactly that.
Inside the Human Machine is a three-day Medical & Biomedical STEM program designed for rising 7th–9th grade students (current 6th–8th graders). Taking place June 29, 30, and July 1 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., this hands-on experience gives students a chance to explore the science behind how our bodies work—and what it takes to care for them.
This unique program is presented by the Illinois Math and Science Academy and made possible through the generous support of the Sparta Health and Wellness Foundation, helping bring high-quality STEM learning opportunities right here to our community.
Learning by Doing
This isn’t a sit-and-listen kind of program.
Students will step into the role of scientists, engineers, and healthcare professionals through interactive activities that make complex concepts fun and approachable.
Throughout the program, students will:
- Build and test strong bone structures
- Design and create their own prosthetic hand
- Try out surgery simulations
- Explore how the brain and muscles work together
- Learn directly from real medical professionals
Each activity is designed to spark curiosity, encourage problem-solving, and show students what a future in healthcare or science could look like.
Real-World Connections
One of the most exciting parts of the program is the opportunity for students to interact with healthcare professionals right here in our community.
From providers to clinical staff, students will get a behind-the-scenes look at the people and roles that keep healthcare moving forward. It’s a chance to ask questions, explore different career paths, and start imagining what their own future could look like.
Building Confidence Through Discovery
Programs like this go beyond science—they help students build confidence.
By trying new things, working through challenges, and seeing their ideas come to life, students gain a better understanding of how they learn and what they’re capable of.
And along the way, there are plenty of moments that make them stop and say,
“Whoa… that’s awesome.”
