Sparta Community Hospital Lead Mammography Technologists, Sara Simpson, (RM) (CT) (T)

Sparta Community Hospital has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in mammography as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

“We are thrilled with the work our Diagnostic Imaging team put into receiving this continued accreditation,” remarks Joann Emge, CEO of Sparta Community Hospital. “This particular accreditation is even more exciting, because it includes our new Genius 3D Mammography equipment.”

3D mammography is an imaging procedure in which an X-ray moves in an arc over the breast, taking multiple images from different angles. The 3D pictures are synthesized by a computer into thin images, making it easier to see tumors. A radiologist is able to review about 200-300 images with 3D mammography, compared to only four derived from a 2D mammogram.

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Parameters and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report that can be used for continuous practice improvement.
